Dentsply Sirona's new releases at DS World

As the event hosts, you’d expect Dentsply Sirona would come with some new announcements - and they didn’t disappoint.

Here’s everything Dentsply Sirona had to announce at DS World

Updates in DS Core’s Communication Canvas, Ordering, and Viewer functionalities

The big theme of the DS Core releases was “patient communication”. It is said that only around 30% of treatment proposals are accepted. So the company is trying to improve patient communication in many different ways.

Dentsply Sirona announced an update to DS Core’s Communication Canvas, which will bring a stack of new updates to the services, such as…

  • Annotations on 2D X-ray, 2D media, and 2D CBCT slices - both freehand drawing and text.
  • GDPR/HIPAA compliant file sharing with patients.
  • Improved chat function for better accessibility from mobile devices.
  • The capability to view even more data formats, such as STL and PLY,

The ability to add annotations to X-ray’s and other media will be an interesting spin on patient communication and involvement with DS Core.

You will be able to show all patient media on any screen - combine with digital impressions, x-rays, photos, etc and annotate for better explanations. This can then be directly shared to the patient - they get an email and can open it at home, and e.g. discuss with their partner, without needing any software.

The company continues to heavily invest in DS Core which will be without a doubt, the current big focus for the company.

Need a quick explainer about what DS Core actually is? Check out this blog we wrote.

A new SureSmile Simulator for DS Core

The SureSmile Simulator is essentially a ortho simulator that is powered by DS Core. Much like iTero's or 3Shape's ortho simulator for their scanners.

Like any ortho simulator app, it’s really helpful to communicate with patients and improve aligner case acceptance, as the patient can easily see their new smile and envision what they’ll look like.

The SureSmile Simulator works by measuring initial models and generating estimated treatment duration and complexity from the post-simulation results, and clinicians can enter the planning phase with greater insight.

All you have to do is take a scan with the Primescan, log in to DS Core, run a simulation, and initiate the order. Pretty simple!

Same with as the Communication Canvas above, the outcome simulator can be shared with the patient via DS Core. The patient will be able to see what will happen in the treatment and how long it will take.

Now that there’s another ortho simulator on the market, it will be interesting to see how it compares to what else is available.

New resins for the Primeprint

As part of DS World, Dentsply Sirona announced some new resins would be coming to Primeprint.

Most notably, Lucitone Digital Print will be available on the Primeprint going forward! This resin is widely considered the gold standard material for 3D printing dentures across the market. It is also currently available for Asiga and Carbon printers too.

They also announced a new clear soft splint material - Primeprint Splint ST, which the company says when printing will require no polishing.

Finally, Dentsply Sirona is also bringing out a new gingiva mask material as well - this will be more useful for labs.

Some good news for Primeprint owners.

Dentsply Sirona and 3Shape expand their workflow integrations

Dentsply Sirona and 3Shape are finally working together and improving their workflow integrations.

This partnership aims to streamline the scan-to-lab process for dentists through the DS Core and 3Shape Unite platforms, allowing for design and manufacturing protocols to be established directly within dental practices.

With this integration, Dentsply Sirona's intraoral scanners, like Primescan, can directly connect with the 3Shape Dental System Software, expediting order transmission to laboratories.

Additionally, 3Shape’s TRIOS scanners can now connect with Dentsply Sirona’s in-office milling and printing tools via DS Core, facilitating the immediate production of prosthetics and other dental applications.

In essence this is an integration between 3Shape scanners and DS Core. You will still need inLab onsite if you want to use your 3Shape scanners with Primeprint / CEREC mills.

Some of you may be wondering - what is the point of this? We could still do this manually by exporting STLs and importing them into inLab to use the mills. The main advantages of this integration are:

  • Automatic Upload into DS Core from TRIOS
  • DS Core will have an built-in convertor of the DCM TRIOS format which keeps colour. Rather than using monochrome STL
  • Faster and easier workflow than exporting and importing STLs.

Overall, it is not a mind-blowing release and frankly we would have liked to see a direct TRIOS to CEREC Mill integration but I think the most exciting thing is that this is the beginning. At least it is official you can use TRIOS with CEREC.

These companies have been directly competing for so long and as both companies are massive heavyweights in the industry, we’re excited to see what else comes of it. Especially with the development of DS Core.

Ivoclar’s latest Zirconia on display at DS World

Aside from the steady stream of Dentsply Sirona’s releases, we also learnt about Ivoclar’s new zirconia CAD/CAM material
- IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime (yes the e.max name is used for their zirconia too).

Ivoclar new IPS e.max ZirCAD product line, has some impressive features.

  • Strong - 1100 MPa
  • Aesthetic - with a range of shades
  • 15 Minute Sintering Time in the CS6 Furnace.
  • Suitable for a range of dental applications, from crowns, bridges, implant restorations etc

The coolest thing about this zirconia is that it looks great and can be sintered very quickly.

It seems to be Ivoclar's response to the popular Katana chairside zirconia.

Have you had a chance to try it yet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Other releases at DS world that are not digital dentistry related include:

OSSIX Agile

OSSIX Agile is a new pericardium-based membrane. OSSIX Agile is made from decellularized porcine pericardium (collagen type I and III) and powered by  GLYMATRIX technology, providing a strong, easy-to-handle, and biocompatible solution for GBR & GTR procedures.

Midwest Energo

Dentsply Sirona is bringing out a completely new electric handpiece series. The new Midwest Energo features a significantly increased lifetime and will come with various new innovations.

Some really interesting updates. Which one are you most excited about?
