What is Primescan Connect?

In a surprise announcement today at DS World 2022, Dentsply Sirona has just introduced a new Primescan configuration - Primescan Connect.

Many of you will know that since their inception, CEREC scanners have always been a cart scanner. Single configuration, custom built cart with a PC. Either scan only or with the CEREC chairside CAD software.

The CEREC Primescan is one of my favorite scanners of all time thanks to the amazing same-day crown workflow. You can read my review of that scanner here.

Now we have had the first change to this in decades - Primescan Connect.

The Primescan is now available in a laptop configuration.

According to the company, "enjoy all the benefits of Primescan at a more accessible price".

Although this exact price is not released yet, it seems Dentsply Sirona are feeling the market pressure.

Apparently the package in Australia is as follows, 37,500 AUD excl GST for:

  • Laptop and case
  • 3 years DS Core light (1TB cloud storage)
  • DSCore Care. The DS Core Care has 3 years warranty on all parts

Few details are available at the moment and we still have many questions such as:

  • What is the RRP?
  • Does it always come with a laptop or can any laptop be used?
  • Is the software locked to a single laptop/PC provided by DS?
  • Will there be a mandatory subscription cost via DS Core?
  • Can you opt out of the DS Core and just use the Primescan Connect as a local scan-and-send scanner.

It seems that Primescan Connect will not be a CEREC scanner (note the drop of the CEREC branding in the name). Meaning it will not have CAD software, rather it will be a scanner only device.

However, there seems to be a push of DentSply Sirona's new DS Core system (read more in our Primeprint article) that will enable you to sync scans to a cloud service as the DS .dxd file. These files can then be taken from the cloud and used in a CEREC machine or design station.

The scanner-only Primescan cart did not seem to take off. It will be interesting to see how they price this one and what the response is from dentists. Dentsply Sirona really need to find a way to get into the scanner-only market.

So in summary, a laptop-based version of the Primescan intraoral scanner, which is scanner-only with no CAD software.

Check out the video released by the company below.

Interesting move by Dentsply Sirona. Leave your comments and thoughts below.
