3Shape’s popular Unite platform is getting an update - and it’s a big one.

Although this news maybe overshadowed by the likes of the Medit i900, SprintRay Midas, and Formlabs 4B, it is massive news for all 3Shape TRIOS users.

The company has announced that the 3rd Generation of Unite will be rolling out progressively worldwide.

In essence, it is a cloud platform. Before this update, all TRIOS scans were stored locally or on servers. Now, everything is going to the cloud. So you can access your scans from anywhere, not just in your clinic.

3Shape is going one step further by not just offering a cloud, but also re-launching a completely new and cloud-based Unite Cloud app and website.

With this new update, dental professionals can access and work with their digital impressions and patient cases anywhere via mobile, tablet, or desktop - all thanks to the new cloud storage update.

Wherever you make changes to the files, this will automatically synchronize. So you can take 3Shape scans, open up the iPad app (Unite Cloud app) - take some photos, upload, and it will all be in the same patient file across all your devices and scanners.

“3Shape Unite 3rd Generation transforms how dental professionals work with patient data. Having cases and scans up on the cloud with 3Shape means you can manage cases on the go, even from your mobile. Cloud storage also helps to eliminate concerns regarding hard drive storage, server management, or disaster recovery for dentists,” said 3Shape CTO Niclas Blohm.

Having a reliable backup of scans is absolutely massive; it’s great to see 3Shape finally joining the movement by getting everything on the cloud and ultimately giving users what they want.

3Shape has a great video, which you can view below, that explains how everything works.

3Shape Unite Cloud Mobile App

As mentioned above, as part of the update, 3Shape has released a new mobile app called 3Shape Unite Cloud, which allows you to upload photos directly onto the platform via your mobile phone, track case progress, and communicate directly with labs from your mobile device.

As you’d expect, 3Shape Unite is fully compliant with HIPAA and GDPR requirements and is ISO 27001 certified to ensure robust security safeguards. All patient data is encrypted, stored, and transmitted securely.

What is 3Shape Unite?

3Shape Unite was created because the rapid digitization of dentistry meant that there was a huge influx of new tools and workflows in the clinic. However, they were all disconnected; using them in unison could be a real headache.

3Shape Unite is a platform that is trying to connect practice management systems, scanners, thousands of labs, leading dental companies, clear aligner manufacturers, 3Shape apps, milling machines, 3D printers, and other companies all in one software.

Currently they have over 25,000 labs on the platform and 100 different partners that you can connect with.

For the dentist, it's all about making a platform that is easy to use and navigate. And improve the patient experience by allowing dentists to use/order anything they need from one platform, helping improve the efficiency of the entire process.

For labs, it will make their life easier as all the patient information and digital records will be gathered in one place and accessible from anywhere.

How much will 3Shape Cloud Storage cost?

That is the big question and is still unknown for now. All cloud storage costs something, whether it is Medit, DS Core, or 3Shape. Storage aint free.

It will be interesting to see what the different tiers of costs are going to be around this cloud storage and how 3Shape will offer different options.

I have been advised by the company that, for now at least, TRIOS Care (the TRIOS warranty and maintenance subscription), will include cloud storage access up to 10 TB. TRIOS Only (the subscription free option) will recieve 10 GB.

So basically, TRIOS Care subscribers get 10,000 GBs compared to the 10 GB that subscription-free users will get. Interesting.

This is all the information we have so far. We will keep you up to date with more information as it is released.
