Wow.

3Shape has just announced they will offer a new subscription-free option for all their intraoral scanners. This is a huge announcement and it seems like it was a decision due to market pressure.

Zero on-going fees when using a TRIOS scanner. This includes all scanners in the current TRIOS portfolio: TRIOS 3 Basic, TRIOS 3, TRIOS 3 Wireless and TRIOS 4.

This is major news for anyone who already owns a TRIOS scanner and those who may be considering investing in one. To read the full announcement by 3Shape click here.

We reviewed the TRIOS scanners and found them to be some of the best in the industry. One factor that really annoyed us with the scanner is the fact that it felt like you rented it. If the subscription fee was not paid, you could not use the scanner at all. This is no longer the case.

The new TRIOS service agreements are as follows:

  • TRIOS CARE - what current TRIOS users are familiar with. Subscription fees for software updates, new features, support, warranties, 1-on-1 training by 3Shape, trade-up offers etc.
  • TRIOS ONLY - no subscription fees.  You still get the software updates but support is charged per case. Also you will need to pay for new features added to the software.

It It is important to note that the first year of the TRIOS CARE Subscription is included in the purchase price of every TRIOS scanner. So you can make this decision to opt-out of subscription fees a year later if you don't find a use for the TRIOS CARE agreement.

An interesting point is TRIOS users currently cannot straight away opt-out of subscription fees. As noted: "TRIOS Care and TRIOS Only will be available to current customers on the expiration of active CliniCare (TRIOS subscription) agreements from early 2022. Switching from TRIOS CliniCare (the current model) will require a minimum 24-months commitment to TRIOS Care before being eligible for TRIOS Only."

Although not a perfect subscription-free option and it has some clear downsides, it is a step in the right direction for 3Shape. It is great to see the market move towards offering users a non-subscription model for intraoral scanners. Without a doubt, this move is partially due to the Medit intraoral scanners.
