As always, our People's Choice Award will be decided by our community, so make sure you cast your vote.
Let's dive into the winners!
IOS of the Year
Shining 3D Aoralscan Elite
Awarded to the best new intraoral scanner released in 2024.
The Aoralscan Elite takes this year's top award by delivering an impressive complete package. The best part is the groundbreaking intraoral photogrammetry (IPG) workflow that took the industry by surprise. This scanner combines an included high-accuracy coded scanbody kit and works extremely well for full arch implant cases.
This is not just for full-arch dentsits however, the Elite is also great for every-day digital dentistry. Shining 3D has managed to pack all this technology into a surprisingly compact form factor, making it one of the most lightweight and ergonomic options available.
Adding to this is years of software development that have resulted in a comprehensive suite of applications. This relatively mature software platform, combined with the Elite's competitive pricing and IPG, creates a value proposition that's hard to ignore.
For a company previously known for their budget-friendly options, the Elite shows that Shining 3D is capable of leading innovation at the premium end of the market. They've managed to create something that isn't just different - it's better in ways that matter clinically.
Close call with our second winner almost taking the 2024 top spot...
Innovation in Scanning
Dentsply Sirona Primescan 2
Recognising groundbreaking advancement in intraoral scanning technology in 2024.
The Primescan 2 earns this award by fundamentally changing how intraoral scanners process data. For the first time in digital dentistry, we're seeing true cloud-based scanning - where the processing happens in the cloud rather than on local hardware.
This isn't just a technical achievement - it's a paradigm shift in how we think about digital impressions. By moving processing to the cloud, Primescan 2 eliminates the need for expensive, powerful laptops or desktops that have been a hallmark of digital dentistry. Practices can now scan on virtually any device, from basic laptops to tablets.
The implications of this innovation extend beyond just hardware savings. What makes this truly innovative is how DS Core is evolving into a comprehensive platform for digital dentistry. By building this platform, Dentsply Sirona is laying the groundwork for future innovations. The ability to instantly share scans, access AI diagnostics, cloud-based CAD and collaborate with colleagues globally through a single platform suggests where digital dentistry is heading.
The Primescan 2's cloud scanning capability is impressive, but it's the integration with this broader platform that makes it truly innovative.
IOS Overachiever
Alliedstar AS 200E
Awarded to the scanner that delivers exceptional value through performance, innovative features, and accessibility
The Alliedstar AS 200E proves that excellent scanning capability doesn't have to come with a premium price tag. After their recent software overhaul, this scanner delivers performance that challenges much more expensive options in the market.
The build quality is impressive. The scanner feels solid and well-engineered, with thoughtful design touches like buttons on both sides of the scanner. The wireless charging solution is especially clever - the scanner dock doubles as a charging station, both for the scanner and spare batteries, eliminating the need for separate charging hardware.
What really sets the AS 200E apart is how the entire package comes together. The improved software platform brings a clean, intuitive interface and efficient workflows, while the scanning performance delivers consistently reliable results. Add in the convenience of wireless operation and smart charging solution, and you have a scanner that exceeds expectations.
Best Same-Day Dentistry Workflow
CEREC Primescan + Primemill
Awarded to the best intraoral scanner and in-office milling machine combination sold by the same company.
Once again, CEREC takes home this award - and for good reason. While the market has seen an explosion of third-party CAD software options and milling solutions, nobody has managed to match the seamless integration and workflow efficiency that CEREC provides.
Think of it as the Apple of dental CAD/CAM - yes, it's a relatively closed ecosystem, and yes, it comes at a premium price point, but the user experience is unmatched. The integration between Primescan and Primemill remains the gold standard for single-visit dentistry, with a workflow so refined it feels almost effortless.
While solutions like exocad paired with third-party mills can offer more flexibility and potentially lower costs, they can't match the streamlined, polished experience that CEREC delivers. From scan to design to mill, every step is optimized to work together perfectly. There's no dealing with file exports, software conflicts, or compatibility issues - it just works.
The introduction of cloud processing with Primescan 2 has made this workflow even more interesting. While the system's price tag remains a significant barrier to entry, for practices focused on same-day dentistry, the return on investment comes not just from the technology, but from the time saved with this seamless workflow.
Best IOS Design
Shining 3D Aoralscan Elite
Awarded to the scanner for breakthrough design innovations that enhance both form and function in 2024.
The Shining 3D Elite wins this year's design award by delivering an exceptionally well-thought-out scanning system. Weighing in at just 124g, it's remarkably light while incorporating advanced photogrammetry technology into its compact frame.
What truly stands out is the thoughtful approach to the complete package. The Elite comes with multiple different scanner tip sizes - one optimized for general scanning and another specifically designed for full arch implant cases with the IPG workflow. But it's the included coded scan body kit that really showcases Shining 3D's commitment to comprehensive design. The scan bodies are color-coded, systematically organized, and integrate seamlessly with the software workflow.
The entire system demonstrates exceptional attention to clinical workflow. From the scanner's physical design to the scan body organization to the software integration, everything works together cohesively. The Elite proves that good design isn't just about aesthetics - it's about creating a complete system where every component complements the others.
Best Mid-Range Scanner
3Shape TRIOS Core
Given to the scanner with the best overall performance for under $13,000 USD.
3Shape's TRIOS Core takes this year's mid-range scanner award by bringing premium scanning technology to a more accessible price point. By streamlining the TRIOS software package while maintaining the core scanning excellence that TRIOS is known for, 3Shape has created a compelling option for practices looking for proven technology without the premium price tag.
The TRIOS Core retains the excellent scanning capability and renowned TRIOS edentulous scanning ability of its more expensive siblings. What you give up are some of the engagement apps found in the premium versions, but the fundamental scanning experience remains impressive. The scanner still produces the accurate, detailed scans that have made TRIOS a respected name in digital dentistry.
I believe the scanner hits a sweet spot in the market - proven TRIOS hardware and essential features at a price point that makes sense for many practices who may have been priced out previously. For those who want TRIOS quality at the lowest cost possible, the CORE offers an excellent balance of performance and value.
Best Entry-Level Scanner
Eighteeth Helios 500
Given to the scanner with the best overall performance for under $7,000 USD.
At around $5,000 USD, the Helios 500 represents something remarkable in digital dentistry - a genuinely affordable entry point that delivers clinically acceptable results. While it may lack the advanced software features of more expensive scanners, it handles the fundamentals of digital impressions competently. Dont get it wrong either, this is a fast scanner.
The scanner delivers reliable performance for everyday clinical needs. Its straightforward software interface focuses on the essential functions that most practices use daily, without overwhelming users with complex features they may never need.
What makes the Helios 500 particularly noteworthy isn't just its low price - it's that it provides a legitimate path into digital dentistry for practices that might otherwise find the initial investment prohibitive. The scanner proves that acceptable digital impression technology can now be delivered at a fraction of what was possible just a few years ago.
Most Improved IOS
iTero Lumina
Awarded to the company who have most improved their product after previously releasing an intraoral scanner.
The iTero Lumina represents a complete reinvention of the iTero line. While the Element 5D and 5D+ are acceptable performers, they were known for their bulky design and dated scanning speeds. The Lumina changes everything about the iTero experience.
Most notably, iTero has dramatically reduced the scanner size. The new scanner is significantly more compact than its predecessors, making it much more comfortable to use in daily practice. This size reduction doesn't come at the expense of features - the Lumina retains all the diagnostic capabilities iTero is known for, just in a much more refined package.
This isn't just a minor update - it's a ground-up redesign that addresses nearly every criticism of previous iTero models. The difference between the Lumina and Element 5D+ is so dramatic that it's hard to believe they're from the same product line. iTero has proven they can completely reimagine their scanner while maintaining the clinical excellence that made them successful in the first place.
Rising Star Award
Straumann
Awarded to the company to keep an eye on in 2025.
Straumann's acquisition of Alliedstar and the launch of their SIRIOS scanner may mark a significant shift in the intraoral scanner market. When one of dentistry's biggest players makes a move like this, the entire industry takes notice.
The acquisition of Alliedstar was clearly the first step in Straumann's broader scanner strategy. By leveraging Alliedstar's scanning technology and combining it with their own considerable resources and expertise, they've created something interesting with the SIRIOS scanner. But what makes Straumann a rising star isn't just their new scanner - it's what this means for the broader digital dentistry landscape.
Straumann's established global presence, extensive reseller network, and deep relationships with dental practices worldwide means they could rapidly become a major player in the scanner market. Their understanding of clinical workflows, particularly in implant dentistry, could lead to some interesting developments in scanner-implant integration.
With Straumann's track record of acquiring promising technology and scaling it successfully, we expect to see significant developments in their scanner division over the coming year. The question isn't if Straumann will make waves in the scanner market - it's how big those waves will be.
Best IOS Software Apps
Medit
Awarded to the company with the best software applications for intraoral scanners.
Despite increasing competition in the IOS space, Medit continues to dominate this category. While other companies have been playing catch-up by adding basic apps to their scanners, Medit's software suite remains unmatched in both breadth and depth.
What sets Medit apart is not just the quantity of apps - it's their quality and integration. From their Model Builder to their newly enhanced Clinic CAD software, every app feels polished and purposeful. Their Smile Design, orthodontic simulation tools, and advanced AI-powered features continue to evolve with meaningful updates.
Most impressively, Medit maintains their "no subscription" model - all these professional-grade apps come included with their scanners (although there is a minimal fee for cloud storage of scans).
In an industry trending toward subscription-based software, this commitment to providing comprehensive, free software tools deserves recognition. The recent addition of full CAD capabilities has effectively transformed their software from a collection of apps into a complete digital dentistry platform. While other companies are still figuring out basic applications, Medit continues to push the boundaries of what scanner software can do.
Best IOS Community Support
3Shape
Awarded to the company with the best community of helpful dentists and customer support.
2024 marks a changing of the guard in this category. While Medit previously set the gold standard for community support, 3Shape has emerged as the new leader in fostering a vibrant, supportive digital dentistry community.
3Shape has clearly studied what made Medit's community support so successful and built upon it. Their Facebook user group has become a thriving hub of knowledge sharing, with active participation from both experienced users and 3Shape team members. But they've gone beyond just social media engagement - their comprehensive support framework now includes regular webinars, hands-on training sessions, and an extensive onboarding program that helps new users transition smoothly into digital workflows.
What sets 3Shape apart is their structured approach to education and support. Their multi-tiered learning pathway combines online resources, live training, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. The company has invested heavily in creating a support ecosystem that caters to users at every skill level, from those just starting their digital journey to advanced users pushing the boundaries of what's possible with their TRIOS scanners.
TRIOS Care is also quite fantastic when you need it. If you drop your scanner and break it, the company immediately and with basically no questions asked sends you a spare. This level of no-hassle support keeps your clinic running with minimal downtime - something that's absolutely crucial in modern dental practice. It's this kind of practical, real-world support that shows 3Shape truly understands the needs of practicing dentists.
Most Innovative Company
Shining 3D
Awarded to the company which has propelled the digital dentistry industry forward through innovation in 2024.
For the second year running, Shining 3D takes home this award - and the reason is simple: no other company is innovating across as many areas of digital dentistry at such a remarkable pace.
In just the past year, we've seen them release the game-changing Aoralscan Elite scanner, expand their 3D printing ecosystem, develop their face scanner, the MetiSmile, with jaw motion tracking capabilities, and continue developing their software AI and CAD. What's impressive isn't just the number of releases, but how they're systematically covering every aspect of digital dentistry workflow.
While other companies might focus on perfecting a single product category, Shining 3D is pushing boundaries across the entire digital dentistry spectrum. They've managed to be the only company offering a complete ecosystem - from intraoral scanning to facial scanning, from jaw tracking to 3D printing - all developed in-house at a pace that makes some of their competitors look like they're standing still.
The release of the Elite scanner this year proves they're not just about quantity of innovation - they're capable of releasing truly revolutionary products that may change the game entirely. It's this combination of rapid development across multiple categories while still delivering breakthrough innovations that makes Shining 3D the clear winner for most innovative company of 2024.
