Beyond Wireless, True Mobility - that's how Medit is positioning their latest scanner release.

But what does this actually mean, and how does the i900M compare to both the original i900 and the rest of the market?

After reviewing the official materials and specifications, here's everything you need to know about Medit's newest wireless intraoral scanner. Lets get into it.

What Makes the i900M Different?

The i900 Mobility represents a completely different approach from the wired i900 we reviewed earlier this year. While the original i900 focused on ultra-lightweight design with a wired USB-C connection, the i900M goes fully wireless but maintains similar form factors and performance.

Thankfully the battery charger is significantly improved compared to the companies previous wireless scanner the i700 wireless.

Key points:

  • True wireless operation - no dongles or hubs required for basic scanning
  • iPad-first design with dedicated Medit Link Express app.
  • 1-hour continuous scanning on a single charge
  • Direct device connection via built-in WiFi, enabling fast connection without network intermediaries
  • Multiple connectivity options - iPad wireless, laptop wireless, or laptop with hub

Hardware Specifications at a Glance

  • Weight = 242g (excluding tip and battery)
  • Dimensions = 209 x 42 x 42mm
  • Battery Life = 1 hour continuous scanning
  • Charging Time = 2 hours from empty to full.
  • Field of View = 18x15mm (Large tip)
  • Connectivity= WiFi6E, or the fastest wifi nearby the user
  • Scanner Tips = Large, Medium, Small (autoclavable)

The "True Mobility" Concept

Medit is making a big claim with "Beyond Wireless, True Mobility." Here's what they mean:

Clinical Flexibility

  • Untethered scanner - no cables
  • Room-to-room mobility - easily move between operatories
  • Instant access - scan and place orders from anywhere

Connected Experience

  • Patient engagement - show 3D results instantly on a iPad
  • Team connectivity - seamless workflow across multiple locations
  • Real-time visualization - chairside consultations with immediate scan review

Three Ways to Use the i900M

1. Mobile Version (iPad)

  • Wireless connection to iPad
  • Uses Medit Link Express app
  • Perfect for chairside consultations and quick scans

2. Comprehensive Version (Laptop Wireless)

  • Direct wireless connection to Windows laptop
  • Full Medit Link software functionality
  • No additional hardware required

3. Comprehensive Version (Laptop with Hub)

  • Uses scanner cradle as connection hub
  • Most stable connection option

Medit Link Express - The iPad Experience

The i900M comes with a dedicated iPad app called Medit Link Express, designed specifically for mobile workflows:

Core Features:

  • Create → Scan → Send workflow in three simple steps
  • Express Scan Mode and Treatment Scan Mode options
  • Real-time screen sharing for patient consultations
  • Minimal learning curve - staff can start scanning immediately
  • Instant launch - zero wait time when opening the app

Key Benefits:

  • Much simplier UI - intuitive interface eliminates setup complexity
  • Essential functions only - streamlined for speed and simplicity
  • Automatic sync with full Medit Link platform
  • No additional fees - included with scanner purchase

Hardware Features

Smart Battery Management

  • IC8060 certified chipset in the scanner reliability
  • Auto-detection system prevents overheating and overcurrent
  • Real-time alerts display battery status and warnings
  • Magnetic charging connection with dual battery support

Touch Interface Innovation

Unlike the original i900's touch interfaces, the i900M uses traditional silicone buttons:

  • Scan button - start/stop scanning
  • Control button - customizable functions via Medit Link settings
  • Button-level workflow customization for personalization

LED Status System

  • Handpiece LED - scanning status and device condition
  • Battery charger LED - power level indicators
  • All-in-one cradle LED - comprehensive status display

Connectivity and Performance

WiFi 6E Implementation

  • Fast, low-latency data transmission
  • Direct device connection without network intermediaries
  • Stable operation even with poor internet connectivity
  • Secure communication between scanner and device

i900M Field of View

The i900M maintains the 18x15mm field of view on the large tip - the same as the original i900.

Larger FOV scan tips are becoming more common in the industry for multiple reasons including:

  • Faster scanning with fewer passes
  • Reduced stitching errors
  • Better accuracy in posterior regions

Clinical Workflow Integration

Patient Engagement Benefits

  • Instant 3D visualization on iPad for immediate patient engagement
  • Chairside consultations with real-time scan review
  • Transparent communication helping build patient trust
  • Annotation tools for treatment planning discussions

Practice Efficiency Gains

  • Multi-operatory flexibility - one scanner serves multiple rooms
  • Staff delegation - hygienists and assistants can scan independently
  • Reduced bottlenecks - no computer boot times or software updates
  • Simplified IT management - minimal technical support required

Things to consider

Battery Dependency

  • 1-hour battey life - thankfully easily interchangeable batteries.
  • 2-hour charging time could impact workflow if not managed
  • Battery degradation over time is a consideration with all wireless scanners.

WiFi Requirements

  • Network dependency for some features
  • Potential interference in crowded WiFi environments
  • IT setup may be required for optimal performance

Software Ecosystem Integration

Medit Link Synchronization

  • Single account access for both Express and full Medit Link
  • Automatic data sync across all platforms
  • Seamless workflow transition from mobile to desktop
  • No additional subscription fees to use Medit Link Express

Third-Party Compatibility

The i900M maintains Medit's excellent third-party integration with:

  • Major CAD software platforms
  • Laboratory management systems
  • Practice management software
  • Cloud storage solutions

Market Positioning and Pricing

While official pricing hasn't been announced, expect the i900M to be positioned as a premium mobility solution. Given the original i900's $24,500 price point and the added mobile technology, the i900M will likely command a premium.

Competitive Landscape:

  • 3Shape TRIOS 5 - current wireless market leader
  • Dexus Imprevo - latest wireless scanner by DEXIS
  • Primescan 2 - Sirona's wireless solution scanning on the cloud
  • Shining 3D Elite wireless - wireless version of the Elite.
  • Various Chinese wireless scanners - budget alternatives

Bottom Line

The Medit i900M represents a genuinely innovative approach to wireless scanning. Rather than simply making the i900 wireless, Medit has created a mobility-first ecosystem centered around iPad workflows and true practice flexibility. The only other scanner that utilizes an iPad is the 3DISC Ovo scanner.

What's immediately striking is how it differentiates itself from other wireless scanners on the market. The iPad integration is particularly clever. Anyone who's tried to use an iPad for serious clinical work knows the challenges - limited processing power, file management headaches, and software compromises. But for scanning workflows, Medit has actually turned the iPad's limitations into advantages. The simplified interface, instant launch, and focus on patient engagement rather than complex post-processing makes a lot sense for chairside work.

The engineering decisions also feel thoughtful. The improved battery management system and magnetic charging show they've learned from early wireless scanner mistakes. And maintaining the 18x15mm field of view means scan quality shouldn't suffer despite the wireless complexity.

Perhaps most importantly, this isn't just another "me too" wireless scanner. Medit is clearly positioning themselves for the next phase of digital dentistry - one where scanning becomes more distributed throughout the practice rather than concentrated at a single workstation.

Whether this vision resonates with enough practices to justify what will likely be premium pricing remains to be seen. But after reviewing countless scanners over the years, it's refreshing to see a manufacturer take genuine risks and try something different.

We'll be getting hands-on with the i900M as soon as possible to put these concepts through their paces. Until then, if you're in the market for scanning technology, our Free Scanner Guide breaks down all the current options to help you make the right choice for your practice.
