Hey guys, this is Dr. Ahmad Al-Hassiny at the Institute of Digital Dentistry, and I'm here again with another unboxing video. This time, the 3Shape Trios 4 Move+.

Anyone who's considered getting a scanner for their practice has without a doubt, heard of the Trios scanners. These scanners are some of the most popular on the market and they're well-regarded by dentists globally.

We've had a Trio scanner in our practice for over five years. There are fast and capable scanners.

Now 3Shape is not a new company to the dental industry. Like other scanner companies. The first product was actually a lab scanner released in 2005. And since then, they released their first intraoral scan in 2011, the Trios 4 is their latest product and it was released in 2019.

It is not the newest scanner on the market, but it is 3Shape's latest intraoral scanner.

The Trios Move

The Trios 4 comes in three configurations.

  • The Trios 4 pod, which is basically a USB scanner that can be used with any suitable laptop or desktop.
  • And the Trios Move or Move+. The Trios Move and Move+ are the cart versions of the scanner, with the Move+ just having a larger screen.

In the first layer of the box, we find two things, a quick start guide, which basically just tells you how to assemble the Trios Move, and the Trios 4 itself.

Do you need a subscription to use the Trios Move?

The Trios Move Box showing the Trios Care sticker

So this is the 3Shape Trios 4 scanner box. Now right off the bat what we see is a sticker that says Trios Care, and this is the company's new name for their subscription options.

Traditionally, all 3Shape scanners require a subscription to use. If you didn't pay the subscription, you couldn't use the scanner.

And especially of recent time, this was met with a lot of contention, especially with all the free to use scanners that are now on the market.

So what this new subscription packages is, is 3Shape released two options, (1) Trios Care, which is their traditional subscription option. It's basically a service package and (2) Trios Only, which is a completely subscription free option.

That means completely subscription free Trios Scanners and that includes software updates. Interesting thing to note is that every 3Shape scanner, including the Trios 4 comes with one year free of the Trios Care subscription.

The Trios 4 Scanner

This is the Trios 4 Scanner. And personally, I think it's one of the most aesthetic scanners on the market. I really think it just looks very modern and high tech.

Now, some of the other things that come inside the box, are five scanner tips, a battery pack, and 3d calibration and color calibration tools.

So if we look at this Trios 4, for a second, what we see straight away is that it comes with a protective sleeve and how you take off these scanner tips is you simply twist off and take it off.

The Trios 4 Smart Tips

The Trios 4 Smart Tips

Now, this is what the company calls smart tips. And this is really what differentiates the Trios 4 from all other Trios scanners.

The reason being is three main things.

  • These smart tips can be autoclaved up to 150 times, which is a massive number.
  • They also have an autoclave tracker in them. They can be heated up very fast from dead cold to turning it on and being able to use it within 10 seconds with no fogging.
  • The third factor that makes this scanner tip so special is the fact that they conserve battery power, which is really important for a wireless scanner.

So speaking of wireless, here's the battery pack and it slides very easily into the back of the Trios 4.

A couple of interesting things about these battery packs is that from empty to full charge, takes a couple of hours, but you can use them within about 10 minutes of charging.

The other interesting thing is, is that these battery packs lasts about an hour of scanning, which is ample time for most of your day-to-day procedures.

The Trios 4 Battery Pack

The power cord

So moving on, let's see what else is inside the box.

If I move this to the side here, underneath all of this, what you see is the classic sort of manuals that come with all these scanners.

I don't know anyone who actually reads these, but anyway, the other interesting things you find. Is a power cord.

So the Trios 4 even though it is a wireless scanner, a lot of people are worried.

You know, what, if all the batteries, are dead, what do I do? Well, you can actually still plug this in manually and plug this into your Trios Move, and use the scanner as a wired scanner.

Some other things we find in here is a wrist strap. This is quite common with many scanners these days on the market, a power cable for the battery charger, two more battery packs. So that's three in total that come with the scanner.

And a charger for your batteries. And the battery simply slide on like this, and that's basically everything you get with the Trios 4 scanning box.

So that covers the Trios 4 scanner box. Now, the other part that we haven't even talked about yet is the cart, which is the Trios Move, and that's, what's inside the rest of this box.

The Trios 4 Move+: The Positives

So this is the Trios Move, and arguably it’s one of the most ergonomic carts on the market.

And like I mentioned before, it does come with a quick start installation guide. Thankfully there's not too much to do. It's really just one screw and you can get this up and running, but I'll save you the pain of watching me fumble with this, and we're going to use the power of video to assemble this.

And this is the Trios 4 Move+ in all its glory.

Now, when I look at this thing, it's a bit like the Trios 4 scanner, and then it just screams incredibly modern and hi-tech.

One of the main things I really like about the scanner is just how ergonomic it is. To me it’s one of the best cart scanners on the market.

Due to the spec. This scanner screen, I would say, is as close to the perfect size for patient engagement and for your own use. And it can easily be tilted and moved up and down.

This has two main benefits. For you, you can use it either sitting, standing, and also for the patient, in that it can easily be moved in front of the patient while they're in the chair to increase engagement.

The other thing about the Trios 4 Move, is that it comes preloaded with all of the 3Shape engagement applications.

  • Orthodontic simulation
  • Smile design
  • Caries detection, and patient monitoring.

And this all works together with the ergonomics of the scanner so that you can show the patient, all these things on the screen. So that's all the positives about the Trios Move.

The Trios 4 Move+ is ergonomic for both you and the patient

What are the drawbacks of the 3Shape Trios 4 Move+?

In my opinion, there's only two of things. One thing is that the scanner cart itself doesn't actually come with a battery pack. That means if it's unplugged, it does turn off. So although it's very ergonomic, the mobility is a bit questionable between clinical rooms, because it does mean that you have to turn it off and turn it on every time.

I hope in the next version, 3Shape, add a battery pack to the Trios Move, to improve this aspect.

The second thing as always is investment cost. The Trios 4 Move is not an entry level scanner. The scanner costs between 60 to $75,000 here in New Zealand. And of course that may be out of the reach for some, but for others like us, it makes perfect sense.

And that's because we're not only investing in the scanner itself, but also in the whole 3Shape ecosystem, which I believe is really where the benefits lie. And that ecosystem I'm referring to is their care ecosystem. As it's one of the best in the industry.

In particular, I’m a fan of the implant studio for implant planning and surgical guides, and the denture design. So that concludes our unboxing of the 3Shape Trios 4 Move+. In my opinion, one of the most ergonomic cart based scanners on the market today and this scanner packs a punch.
