The intraoral scanner market continues to grow. DEXIS has just released its new intraoral scanner, the Imprevo, marking its first scanner launch since acquiring Carestream Dental.
When DEXIS acquired the company, many of us wondered what direction they would take. The Imprevo provides our first concrete answer. I have been using the Imprevo for some time prior to its release, and it is undoubtedly a much better scanner than previous iterations.
DEXIS has introduced new hardware while maintaining what made the DEXIS scanners good - a very flexible, workflow-driven scanning software. As I noted in my CS 3800W review, the strength of these scanners has always been their scan software's adaptability to diverse clinical workflows. So, what's new?
Speed and Processing Power
The Imprevo has a 40 FPS frame rate with what the company calls 'parallel processing architecture'. In practical terms, this means faster scan completion and increased data density in your final mesh. In my clinical use, the higher FPS basically made the scans feel a lot smoother compared to all other DEXIS scanners.
Optical Improvements
DEXIS has implemented several notable upgrades:
- 25mm depth of field: Deep preparations and tight interproximal spaces are now more accessible
- Dual sensor technology: Combines lasers with white LED lighting for more realistic tissue representation
- Enhanced texture capture: The integration between mesh and texture is seamless, improving margin definition
Hardware Refinement
The scanner tip is 20% slimmer with an autoclavable, universal design. No more side tip, as seen with previous DEXIS scanners. Small details, such as the LED status ring and gesture-based smart control (which allows rotating models with hand gestures from across the room), are also nice.
IS ScanFlow v2.0
This is where DEXIS's scanners really shine. IS ScanFlow maintains the open, flexible approach that made the CS 3700W software stand out:
- Completely adaptable system: almost all workflows are changeable, and you can make your own workflows
- Direct SprintRay integration: Seamless connection to in-house 3D printing
- Cloud accessibility: DEXIS IS Connect Cloud enables data sharing and remote access
- DTX Studio Clinic integration: one of the most impressive AI and patient management platforms on the market
The direct integration with DTX Studio Clinic is noteworthy. There are nice features, like being able to overlay scans across time to visualize erosion, wear, and recession, which creates powerful patient communication. Combined with the ability to integrate 2D images and CBCT scans with AI-assisted case setup, this positions Imprevo as more than just a scanning device; it's part of a comprehensive digital ecosystem that DEXIS has been building.
Final Thoughts
The DEXIS Imprevo arrives at a fascinating moment in the intraoral scanner market. With 3Shape, Medit, Shining 3D, and others pushing scanner capabilities forward, DEXIS needed to make a strong statement with its first post-acquisition release.
My initial testing is promising. The combination of improved hardware specifications, enhanced ergonomics, and the excellent IS ScanFlow software creates a compelling value proposition - particularly for practices already in the DEXIS ecosystem.
I'll be sharing my comprehensive review on the Imprevo soon and sharing detailed findings with the iDD community.
Let me know your thoughts.
