Earlier this month, exocad held the fourth edition of its global digital dentistry event, Insights.

During the event, the company showed off its new DentalCAD software update - 3.2 Elefsina.

It looks like there’s some really cool stuff included in this release. They also teased a new a new workflow for stackable guides that's coming to exoplan, but no release date confirmed yet.

exocad is the world leader in dental CAD, especially the lab side. It is a software that really has taken off with the rise of digital dentistry and is arguably one of the best acquisitions ever, being acquired by Align in 2020.

So what's new? What is coming to exocad in the future? Here’s everything we learnt about 3.2 Elefsina.

What are some of exocad’s 3.2 Elefsina’s new features?

There are a whopping 60 new features in this version of exocad, and it looks like many of them are geared toward using AI to make your life easier or to provide a safety net for you.

The new preparation margin repair tool lets you make the most out of imperfect intraoral scans by allowing you to fix up margins to get a solid result, even if the scan has artifacts or holes.

They’ve also introduced a new auto-articulator that automatically accounts for dynamic occlusion.

On top of that, this version integrates compact milling machines. Just pick your preferred block material and start production using the CAD software.

Some of the machines available are:

You can also switch between tooth libraries while keeping your previous setup intact, which should streamline your workflows.

Other new features include:

  • Design post and core restorations so that a crown matching the core can be designed in the same step.
  • New Virtual Articulator support for Gamma Dental Reference SL, Kavo PROTARevo 5B, plus an anatomical “in-skull” articulator visualization
  •  An easier and more efficient process for titanium bases supporting variable screw channel angulation

Here are some highlights that exocad has put together.

Improved Smile Creator

Smile design is all the rage these days. One of the best 3D smile design software is Smile Creator by exocad, and they have made some pretty impressive changes to their Smile Creator module, which should result in better planning and more predictability.

Users can now design virtual gingiva for way more realistic smile outcomes based on the patient's actual teeth.

Another cool addition is that you can adjust the 3D rendering to match the camera's focal length for pinpoint accuracy when creating photo-driven smile designs.

Better Bite Splint and Full Denture Module

The Bite Splint Module in DentalCAD 3.2 Elefsina is introducing more automation and features to help make the design of splints much faster.

For instance, you can design splints for both arches simultaneously. Finally!

The Full Denture Module has also improved. The new Copy Denture tool allows you to copy an existing denture setup instead of relining an old denture.

Dentures on ball attachments are finally supported in this release. No more workarounds are needed.

The company has also added a new module for the Ivoclar Ivotion Denture System, complete with a dedicated tooth library straight from Ivoclar. Ivotion finally opening up?

iTero and exocad Integration

Seeing as iTero and exocad are both owned by the same company, it shouldn’t be surprising to see that 3.2 Elefsina introduces a collaborative integration.

iTero is getting serious. First, with the release of the Lumina earlier this year and now some more integrations with exocad. This may be a big contender in chairside CAD in the future.

Clinicians can now share external case files like images, videos, and X-rays with exocad DentalCAD users through the MyiTero portal.

This new bi-directional case communication means DentalCAD users can share their 3D designs for a much smoother review process, hopefully eliminating frustrating back and forths.

You can validate margins using intraoral camera images from iTero and even visualize the internal tooth structure with iTero's NIRI (Near Infra-Red Imagery) tech.

3.2 Elefsina is now available in the EU and select other markets, contact your distributor if you’re interested in upgrading.

What are your thoughts on these new features? Anything you think they should add? Let me know below.
