Medit is launching the i900 Classic at IDS 2025 on March 25th - basically addressing one of the complaints from users about their flagship i900 scanner - the touch controls.

When Medit introduced the i900 last year, they replaced traditional buttons with capacitive touch panels. It seemed like a modern upgrade, but in practice, I didn't like them too much, and I mentioned this in my review.  I found myself triggering the wrong function or making an unintended gesture.

And it seems many users felt the same because with the i900 Classic, Medit has listened. They now give dentists both options - touch controls if you like them, or a button if you don’t. They’ve kept all the technological advancements of the original i900 - the excellent optical engine, the wider scanning window, the lightweight design - and added a button. It’s exactly the same scanner.

This isn't Medit's first time listening to dentist's feedback. Since disrupting the market with their affordable i500 in 2018, they've built their reputation on democratizing digital dentistry while continually refining their technology. The i900 was their attempt to compete directly with premium scanners from 3Shape, iTero, and Dentsply Sirona, and aside from the touch interface issues, it didn't seem to go off quite as well as the i700 back in the day.

One cause of this is I think is the price. Originally launched at $24,500 USD, Medit once again listened, and now the i900 lineup will now be available starting at $18,999 USD for the scanner only, or $20,999 USD with a bundled high-performance laptop – representing a $5,000 price reduction.

I did a complete review on the i900 (read it here), and to be honest, it is a top tier scanner. At 165 grams, both i900 variants offer great ergonomics. The larger 19 x 15mm scanning tips provide faster and more smooth data capture, particularly beneficial for full-arch cases and edentulous patients. And the scanner's accuracy in my clinical testing ranks among the best on the market.

One other thing the company announce in the same post is their new workflow for full arch implant scanning - utilizing Scan Ladder or Apollo abutments. Every company seems to be responding to the Shining 3D Aoralscan Elite, and now Medit has their own workflow for this.

Of course, Medit's excellent software ecosystem remains one of their strongest selling points. And with the recent announcement that Medit Model Builder and ClinicCAD apps will no longer be free to non-medit users, things may get interesting. The last update Medit mentioned in this announcement was an upgrade to their Orthodontic Simulator.

Back to the point though, the i900 classic is simply a more practical version of Medit's premium scanner. For dentists who want an i900 they now have two options - button or no button.

Not the most ground breaking IDS release but a great scanner just got better in my books.

Thanks for reading.
