February 4, 2025

In the rapidly evolving world of digital dentistry, 3Shape has been a main player for a long time. Thanks to their highly regarded TRIOS line of intraoral scanners.

Since the introduction of the first TRIOS scanner in 2011, 3Shape has continually pushed the boundaries of what's possible in digital impression technology, cementing its position as a leader in the field. TRIOS 3, in particular, made waves.

The TRIOS family has grown and evolved significantly over the years:

2011: Original TRIOS - the original 3Shape intraoral scanner

2015: TRIOS 3 - the scanner that put 3Shape on the map. A major leap in scanning technology and performance

2019: TRIOS 4 - Introducing wireless capability and caries detection

2022: TRIOS 5 - The new flagship, with big improvements to design and function

2024: TRIOS Core - 3Shape’s response to the scanner price war.

2024: Updated TRIOS 3 - A refreshed design with a single USB C connection and maintains the all important Invisalign connection.

Each iteration has (mostly) improved speed, accuracy, and/or functionality, with the TRIOS 5 representing the pinnacle of 3Shape's scanning technology.

The recent update to the TRIOS 3 and introduction of the TRIOS Core demonstrate 3Shape's commitment to maintaining a diverse product line that caters to various needs and budgets within the dental community. They are undoubtedly aware of and feel the pressure of the market.

With four scanner models currently available - TRIOS 5, TRIOS 4, TRIOS Core and the updated TRIOS 3 - choosing the right scanner for your practice can be challenging. Each model offers unique features and benefits, catering to different needs and budgets.

In this comprehensive comparison, we'll explore each TRIOS model's key features, performance capabilities, and price points.

Whether you're considering your first step into digital impressions or looking to upgrade your existing equipment, this guide will provide you with the insights you need to make an informed decision.

OK. Let's go. Let’s cover the world of 3Shape TRIOS scanners.

TRIOS 5 Intraoral Scanner

The TRIOS 5, launched in 2022, is arguably the best 3Shape and arguably the best overall IOS money can buy. As the latest flagship model, it builds upon the success of its predecessors while introducing advanced features and improved performance.

Most notably they made the scanner much smaller, lighter and improved the battery life tremendously. Much better than the TRIOS 4.

The TRIOS 5 boasts fast scanning speeds (in reality, all TRIOS scanners are fast, to be honest), enhanced AI capabilities, and better ergonomics. In our opinion, it is the only wireless TRIOS scanner you should consider.

TRIOS 5 Price

As 3Shape's most advanced offering, the TRIOS 5 is priced at the higher end of their range, at $25,900 USD for the scanner only.

You will also need to buy a suitable laptop which is often bundled by distributors.

This places the TRIOS 5 at the aboslute premium end of the IOS market alongside the flagship scanners of other companies, such as Medit i900 (24.5k), Primescan 2 (~25k), Shining 3D Elite (20k), etc.

TRIOS 5 Specifications

The best feature of the TRIOS 5 is its ergonomics and wireless capability.

At just 299 grams, it is the lightest TRIOS scanner, making it generally more comfortable and enjoyable to use, especially during long scanning sessions.

TRIOS 5 and 4 are the only wireless TRIOS scanners. The TRIOS 5’s wireless technology has been significantly improved compared to the TRIOS 4's. Battery life is significantly longer in TRIOS 5. It is common to rarely need more than one battery change per day.

The TRIOS 5 also has a wider field of view compared to previous models, which enhances scanning efficiency.

It is also the only scanner that uses 3Shape’s new AI, “Scan Assist,” which is their way of using AI and software to reduce stitching errors.

While specific numbers aren't provided, the scanner is known for its high accuracy. But this is a bit of a point of contention. I personally have had great success with TRIOS 5 scanners for many years and personally use it in my clinic (we own five TRIOS 5 scanners  for our group of practices).

But I have heard of some accuracy issues in full arch scanning that some users are facing. It is something the company is aware of and seems to effect only some units according to some big labs I have spoken to. So keep that in mind.

The TRIOS 5 features a new closed-tip head design and the scanners can be autoclaved up to 100 times. The closed-tip is supposed to be to enhance cross-infection control so no saliva gets inside. I personally like the open-tip design of TRIOS 3 or 4 more as its easier to get around tight to reach areas, but you get used to it.

The scanner seamlessly integrates with the 3Shape Unite software ecosystem and offers caries detection capability. The 3Shape software suite also provides patient monitoring functionality for tracking oral health changes over time. This gives users access to various apps, including the AI Model Builder, Orthodontic Simulator, and Smile Design tool, enhancing the scanner's versatility and utility in different dental applications. This is true for all TRIOS scanners.

The TRIOS 5 offers export options in STL and PLY formats and is available in a laptop version or with the ergonomic TRIOS MOVE cart.

The TRIOS 5 is ideal for those who want a very high-level scanner that can handle just about anything. Its advanced features and performance make it suitable for complex cases and those looking to fully embrace digital workflows.

It is my go-to scanner for most indictions in my practice.

Despite its premium price, the TRIOS 5 offers top-tier performance and features that can significantly enhance productivity and patient experience in practices that fully leverage its capabilities.

Lastly, TRIOS 5 is also the only TRIOS scanner that does not need weekly calibration, which may be an interesting feature to consider for your decision-making.

TRIOS 4 Intraoral Scanner

The TRIOS 4, launched in 2019, was a somewhat light release at the time. I often think of it as TRIOS 3.5.

3shape-trios-4-review-image-pod-trios4-wireless-top-scanner-institute-of-digital-dentistry

3Shape TRIOS 4 intraoral scanner

As the predecessor to the TRIOS 5, it did, however, introduce a few innovative features, including wireless capability to the TRIOS line and caries detection. Some elements of the TRIOS 4 have been discontinued in the TRIOS 5, like the ‘smart tips’

TRIOS 4 Price

The TRIOS 4 is positioned as a high-end scanner with a more accessible price point than the TRIOS 5. It's priced at approximately $22,000 USD for the scanner only.

To me, if you are spending this sort of money, you are much better off spending a little bit more and getting the TRIOS 5.

TRIOS 4 Specifications

The TRIOS 4 does provide fast scanning speeds. Again, all TRIOS scanners are fast.

The scanner is a wireless scanner and has a dummy cable included if you want to use it as a wired scanner (TRIOS 5 does not have this - all in for wireless).

In its wireless form, it weighs 375g with the battery, placing it in the higher mid-range for scanner weight. The field of view is smaller than the TRIOS 5 but still provides efficient scanning.

Battery life was and still is a point of contention with the TRIOS 4, often requiring multiple daily battery changes. We personally just kept the scanner connected to a power cable. For wireless connectivity, the TRIOS 4 uses a similar system to the TRIOS 5.

The scanner tips are autoclavable and can withstand up to 150 sterilization cycles. As mentioned open-tip design like TRIOS 3. These open-tips are at higher risk of condensation spots if not cleaned properly and sealed with a gauze before autoclaving.

Like the TRIOS 5, the TRIOS 4 provides patient monitoring functionality and offers export options in STL and PLY formats. It's available in a laptop version or with the TRIOS Move + cart for improved ergonomics.

In terms of software integration, the TRIOS 4 works with the same 3Shape software platform, providing access to various apps, including design tools and patient communication features.

The TRIOS 4 is well-suited for practices looking for a more ‘advanced’ TRIOS scanner than the TRIOS 3 without the premium price of the latest model.

While it may not have the cutting-edge features of the TRIOS 5, the TRIOS 4 remains a versatile scanner for those who want a wireless TRIOS scanner.

TRIOS 3 is no longer being offered as wireless, so it is this or TRIOS 5.

Here are some other reasons why you may consider a TRIOS 4 over a TRIOS 5 or TRIOS 3:

  • The T4 can be both wireless and wired. For dentsits who are deciding between wired and wireless, this may be a good option.

  • Compared with a wireless T3, the T4 scanning tip heats much faster. If tip heating time is an issue, that could be a purchase decision point. This is not relevant when compared with T5 which heats up fast too.

  • Compared with T3, T4 can aid in the detection of surface caries. The T5 can do this as well, of course.

  • In some countries, T5 has not been approved yet, meaning the TRIOS 4 is the best you can get.

  • Compared with TRIOS 5, the TRIOS 4 price is lower.

TRIOS 3 Intraoral Scanner

The TRIOS 3, first introduced in 2015, has been a cornerstone of 3Shape's digital dentistry offering for many years. It represented a significant leap forward in scanning technology and performance when it was released and has since become a trusted tool for many dental professionals worldwide.

3Shape TRIOS 3 intraoral scanner

It frankly changed the game. It is likely the best-sold scanner in the world. A great scanner then and still great now, albeit showing its age a little bit.

Please note that the original TRIOS 3 is not longer going to be made. Any being sold is stock that remains. The Updated TRIOS 3 will completely replace the original TRIOS 3 (more on the updated version below)

TRIOS 3 Price

The original TRIOS 3 is approximately $17,000 USD, making it a mid-range option in the TRIOS lineup. You may find it cheaper as dealers finish up their stock.

TRIOS 3 Specifications

The TRIOS 3 offers solid scanning performance, capturing up to 1000 3D pictures per second. The scanner was available in both wired and wireless configurations, giving users flexibility in their setup. The wireless TRIOS 3’s are no longer being made.

The scanner tips can be autoclaved up to 150 times, and once again have an open-tip design.

The TRIOS 3 was one of the first to feature an integrated intraoral camera, allowing for color scanning and shade measurement.

Key features of the TRIOS 3 include efficient performance for all common dental indications (including single units, bridges, implants, and full arch cases), and an open architecture allowing for easy export of scans in STL and PLY formats.

At the time TRIOS 3 was one of the first open scanners on the market, at a time when most scanners were closed - you could not export anything!

TRIOS 3 and all TRIOS scanners frankly, are particularly good for scanning edentulous patients - often favoured by denturists.

In terms of software integration, the TRIOS 4 works with the same 3Shape software platform, providing access to various apps, including design tools and patient communication features.

One of the TRIOS 3's most significant features is its compatibility with Invisalign workflows outside of North America, China, and Japan.

The ‘downsides’ of the original TRIOS 3 are as follows:

  • Many cables and requiring a power cable - now sorted with the updated TRIOS 3

  • Quite heavy for a scanner by todays standards

  • Heating time - this is the most annoying thing. The TRIOS 3 scanners take a long time to heat up when started cold. Around 3-4 minutes. If not sufficiently warm, the scanner tip fogs up or you will need to use a suction nearby.

Despite being an older model, the TRIOS 3 continues to offer solid performance and essential features that meet the needs of many dental practices. Its longevity in the market is a testament to its reliability and the quality of its core scanning technology.

The Updated TRIOS 3 Intraoral Scanner

Along with the introduction of TRIOS Core in June 2024, 3Shape also revealed an updated version of the TRIOS 3, refreshing its design and improving some features while maintaining the core technology that has made it a trusted scanner for many dental professionals.

Most importantly, it also keeps the Invisalign connection which is NOT available to any other TRIOS scanner. Not TRIOS 5, 4 or Core.

Updated TRIOS 3 Price

The updated TRIOS 3 costs the same as the original TRIOS 3 - approximately €16,900 or $17,000 USD, positioning it as a mid-range option in the TRIOS lineup and overall IOS market.

If you want the Invisalign connection this is what you will pay as a minimum for a TRIOS scanner.

Updated TRIOS 3 Specifications

The updated TRIOS 3 maintains the same scanning performance as its predecessor, the original TRIOS 3.

It captures more images at 1875 images per second. While not as many as the TRIOS 5, it is still excellent. It is not clear if this ‘image per second’ metric the company is showing matters clinically, as even the TRIOS Core is scanned well in our hands.

The scanner features a refreshed design. It looks slightly different from the original TRIOS 3 but weighs the same at 340 grams. This is the same scanner after all, with the same technology.

Updated 3Shape TRIOS 3 intraoral scanner

The updated model includes a redesigned scanner button that's slightly raised and easier to clean than the previous silicone button.

One of the most significant updates is the new Pod design. The updated Pod is 10% smaller and 30% lighter than the previous version, weighing 510 grams. It's now powered entirely by USB-C, simplifying connectivity and reducing cable clutter. No more power cables - great.

The scanner tips are the same as the original TRIOS 3 - autoclavable up to 150 times.

A crucial feature of the TRIOS 3 (updated or not)  is its continued compatibility with Invisalign for users outside North America, China, and Japan.

Regarding software integration, the updated TRIOS 3 works with the same 3Shape scanning software and cloud platform.

The updated TRIOS 3 is ideal for practices that value proven technology and for those who want to send scans to Invisalign. The only other scanners that can be used with Invisalign are iTero scanners (of course) and CEREC Omnicam (I would avoid full arch scanning with this).

The scanner is also a good choice for practices looking to upgrade from older models if they break without the significant investment required for the latest flagship scanners.

TRIOS Core Intraoral Scanner

The TRIOS Core, introduced in June 2024, represents 3Shape's effort to provide a more accessible entry point into its scanner lineup. Market pressure and response.

TRIOS Core says it is ‘based on the proven TRIOS 3 hardware’. What this really means is that this IS essentially a TRIOS 3 with a new name and a cheaper price tag.

However, note that some features are missing that differentiate it from the other TRIOS scanners. Mainly software related. Smart move by 3Shape.

This scanner focuses on essential scanning functions, making it an ideal option for practices looking to step into digital dentistry and get a TRIOS scanner at the lowest possible cost.

TRIOS Core Price

The TRIOS Core is 3Shape's most affordable offering in the current lineup, priced at $12,400 USD.

The lowest cost of a TRIOS scanner has ever been released and puts it in the realm of Medit i600, Aoralscan 3 and a host of ‘lost cost’ scanner options.

This competitive price point will likely make it an attractive option for practices new to digital impressions or those seeking a cost-effective scanner for primarily scan-and-send-to-lab workflows.

TRIOS Core Specifications

The TRIOS Core offers everything you can expect from TRIOS 3 - a solid scanning performance and a solid scanner overall.

The company says it captures a minimum of 1400 images per second, which is less than TRIOS 3, 4 or 5.

This new ‘image per second’ thing that 3Shape states on its website is something I think they are just spinning now because of the release of the TRIOS Core.

Before we never had these metrics and to be honest I think its just a way for them to say that TRIOS Core is somehow inferior to the TRIOS 3 so they can charge less for it while keeping the price higher for TRIOS 3.

In reality, in my humble experience the TRIOS Core works well. In my test of TRIOS Core, I can barely tell any difference between Core and TRIOS 3. If you did not read the image per second thing prior, I dont think I would realise.

The scanner is strictly a wired model, connecting to a newly designed Pod via USB-C, which then connects to a laptop. The new Pod is 10% smaller and 30% lighter than the previous generation, improving portability.

3Shape TRIOS Core intraoral scanner

It weighs 340 grams, the same as TRIOS 3. This makes it a bit heavy for today’s market, as mentioned prior.

The scanner uses the same tips as the TRIOS 3, which are autoclavable up to 150 times.

The TRIOS Core shares the updated design of the updated TRIOS 3 with the redesigned scanner button for improved usability and easier cleaning.

Updated 3Shape TRIOS 3 (L) and TRIOS Core (R)

Although cheaper, the scanner is totally open still - providing export options in STL and PLY formats, maintaining the open architecture that TRIOS scanners are known for.

However, it's important to note that the TRIOS Core does not include some of the advanced features found in higher-end models. It doesn't have wireless capability, caries detection, or access to any of 3Shape's engagement apps like Smile Design and Ortho Simulator. It also does not have shade matching nor the Invisalign integration.

Regarding software integration, the TRIOS Core works with the same 3Shape software and cloud platform. While it doesn't offer access to the full suite of 3Shape's tools, it provides everything needed for efficient scan-and-send workflows.

The TRIOS Core is ideal for practices that are on a budget. This is the TRIOS scanner to get if you cannot afford a TRIOS 5 and you don’t need your scans to be accepted by Invisalign.

Essentially its suited for dental professionals who want the reliability and performance of TRIOS scanners but don't require the advanced features of the higher-end models.

Additional Considerations for TRIOS Scanners

While we've covered the main features and specifications of each TRIOS scanner, there are several other factors worth considering when choosing the right model for your practice:

Ongoing Costs

While the initial purchase price is a key consideration, it's important to factor in ongoing costs:

  • Subscription costs - this is called TRIOS Care. The main benefit of TRIOS Care is the free replacement of your scanner should you drop and break it. One year is included with your scanner purchase, then it is a yearly subscription that is around 250 USD per month per scanner.

  • All TRIOS scanners come with a “TRIOS Only” subscription-free option if you don't want to pay for this.

  • Replacement parts -  Scanner tips need eventual replacement with costs varying by model. Typically around 100 USD per scanner head.

Training and Support

3Shape offers comprehensive training and support for all TRIOS models:

  • Online training resources available through 3Shape Academy

  • Local support provided by certified 3Shape resellers

  • TRIOS 5 and 4 users may have access to more advanced training options

Upgrade Paths

3Shape offers upgrade options for users of older TRIOS models. For instance, TRIOS 3 users may be eligible for trade-in programs when upgrading to TRIOS 5. Always check with your local 3Shape representative for the latest upgrade opportunities.

Compatibility with Third-Party Systems

All TRIOS scanners are open scanners - allowing for easy export of scans in STL and PLY formats.

However depending on your other software, or hardware in your office (e.g 3D printers) you may want to check if TRIOS integrates directly with it as it makes the entire process more efficient and user-friendly.

Comparison with Competitors

It is also worth noting that TRIOS scanners generally compete well with other significant brands in terms of scanning speed and accuracy.

The TRIOS 5, in particular, I would consider as one of the top performers in the current market, but the TRIOS 3 (and, by association, the TRIOS CORE) are also excellent and top-performing scanners.

TRIOS scanners are simply some of the best.

TL;DR: Comparing all TRIOS Intraoral Scanners

The 3Shape TRIOS line offers a diverse range of intraoral scanners to meet the varying needs and budgets of dental practices in 2024 and beyond.

From the cutting-edge TRIOS 5 to the newly introduced TRIOS Core, each model in the lineup offers its own strengths and features.

  • The latest flagship model, TRIOS 5, offers arguably the best scanning experience, wireless capability, advanced AI features, and superior ergonomics. It is the only calibration-free TRIOS scanner and the lightest TRIOS scanner. If you have the money, this is the scanner to buy.

  • The TRIOS 4 is a versatile scanner that can be used wired or wireless. I would consider TRIOS 4 if TRIOS 5 is not available in your region. Otherwise, you are better off spending more and getting the TRIOS 5, or if you are restricted budget-wise, get a TRIOS 3/Core.

  • The newest entry-level scanner, TRIOS Core, has exactly the same hardware as TRIOS 3 but only does scanning. The same software but you are not allowed to use the engagement apps like orthodontic simulators etc. As the lowest cost TRIOS scanner ever released, it is ideal for practices who want to buy the most economical TRIOS scanner. Important to note - unlike TRIOS 3, it does not have Invisalign compatibility and no software apps.

  • The updated TRIOS 3 is a refreshed design of the trusted TRIOS 3. It features a much better and smaller POD that connects to your laptop with one wire (not requiring a power cable like the original TRIOS 3). It is an excellent option for those who want the Invisalign connection or the cheapest TRIOS scanner to access communication apps.

  • The original TRIOS 3 is still a reliable, long-standing model offering solid performance and Invisalign compatibility. However, it will be phased out and replaced by the updated TRIOS 3.

When choosing between these models, it's crucial to consider not just the initial cost but also factors such as scanning speed, software integration, specific features like wireless capability, or caries detection.

It's worth noting that the TRIOS ecosystem extends beyond just the scanners. The 3Shape Unite platform and its growing suite of apps add significant value to any TRIOS scanner, enhancing workflow efficiency and expanding the range of services a practice can offer. 3Shape also has developed some incredible AI CAD tools called 3Shape automate.

Ultimately, the best TRIOS scanner for your practice will depend on your specific needs, budget, and future goals. Whether you're taking your first steps into digital impressions or looking to upgrade your existing digital workflow, 3Shape wants to offer a solution to match your requirements.

As digital dentistry continues to evolve, 3Shape's commitment to innovation ensures that investing in a TRIOS scanner is not just a choice for today but a step towards the future of dental practice.

What are your thoughts on the TRIOS scanners?

I hope you found this article useful in clarifying how to choose a 3Shape scanner.
