TRIOS 5 is coming!

The TRIOS 5 has been officially launched by 3Shape in their online event that happened earlier today. If you missed it, here is the link.

It was an epic launch event with tons of details about the latest and flagship intraoral scanner from 3Shape.

The TRIOS 5 is a complete upgrade to the TRIOS 4. It has been completely redesigned inside and out. 3Shape says this product will take scanning to the next level.

Unlike the TRIOS 4, which was an incremental improvement over TRIOS 3, the TRIOS 5 has an entirely new optical engine and build. This is a significant upgrade. And it is officially released and available to purchase today.

3Shape Scanner Portfolio

TRIOS scanners available now. Left to right - TRIOS 5, 4, 3.

The company says that they have made more than 50 improvements to the TRIOS 5 compared to older generations. As usual for 3Shape products, it looks incredibly stylish and high-tech.

The best part? The cost. The TRIOS 5 has a RRP of around $26,000 USD.

With the release of TRIOS 5 the company has also taken the opportunity to rethink its scanner prices. There is now a reduction in cost of all other TRIOS models. For example TRIOS 4 with the Wireless Pod is now around $22,000 USD RRP.

Also just like other TRIOS scanners, TRIOS 5 has a subscription free option.

3Shape CEO, Jakob Just-Bomholt, says that the TRIOS 5 will be "by far the best intraoral scanner on the market ... a league of its own". Powerful words!

I have taken the liberty to summarize everything we learnt about this new intraoral scanner in the launch event. The 3 focus points were - Ergonomic, Effortless and Hygienic.

Below you will find a summary of all the improvements.

TRIOS 5 Hardware Improvements

  • TRIOS 5 is a new wireless scanner from 3Shape which has been in development for 4 years.
  • This new scanner is completely calibration free! Dentists will no longer need to be concerned about calibrating the scanner before the next patient comes through the door.
  • TRIOS 5 is 30% Smaller and 20% Lighter compared to TRIOS 4.
  • TRIOS 4 total weight (with a battery) = 375 grams
TRIOS 5 total weight (with a battery) = 299 grams

  • Scanning speeds have improved compared to TRIOS 4 and TRIOS 3.
  • ScanAssist is being launched with this new scanner. ScanAssist is an improvement to how the data is stitched together, made possible through a completely redesigned scan engine.
  • ScanAssist is a brand new feature that is said to help significantly reduce stitching errors, especially in the anterior region, This is not available for any other TRIOS scanner.
  • The ScanAssist engine is focused on making the scanning process easier and more efficient, especially for new users. Independent of which scan strategy you choose to use.

  • Improved Battery - requiring only ONE battery per day. A welcomed improvement as the battery life on TRIOS 4 was not great. The company says you scan up to 33 patients or 66 minutes of scan time per battery.
  • The scanner comes with 3 batteries included in the box and of course a charging station.
  • The TRIOS 5 now automatically goes into a Sleep Mode when not in use. Another good addition that TRIOS 4 lacked. In sleep mode the battery will last 7 days.
  • Fast Charging. Charge the battery for 60 minutes to achieve 80% battery power and less than 2 hours for 100%

  • second button has been added. This is used for software navigation and scan analysis without the need to touch the computer.
  • TRIOS 5 has a 360° LED ring to provide users with visual feedback during scanning and operation of the device. It will tell you when the scanner is connected, ready to scan, when actually scanning or low on battery.
  • Haptics have been added. Helping provide more feedback to the user via the application of subtle vibrations during use. Users now have multiple guides during scanning - the LED ring, haptic feedback, and of course the sound (as we know it from previous generations of TRIOS scanners) to see if we are capturing scan data.
  • Scanning tips - closed tip design. These are different to all other TRIOS scanning tips and the focus is making them hygienic and preventing cross-contamination. They will also be cheaper. TRIOS 4 smart tips are not making a return in TRIOS 5.

  • Scanner tip window is made from scratch resistant sapphire glass, so dentists should not be concerned about scratching the surface.
  • Scanning tips can withstand 100 autoclavable cycles.
  • The scanner body design makes for easy cleaning and disinfection. 3Shape provides better hygiene with no vent holes or joints in the scan body housing where it is impossible to clean, and the entire housing is one piece.
  • FDA 510(k) clearance has been obtained for TRIOS 5 and its scanning tips.
  • Body sleeves are offered. These are plastic sleeves that can cover the scanner. Nothing new in the scanner market, but again the company seems to be focusing on hygiene.
  • TRIOS 5 comes with a new scanner base call the pod. The pod is also designed with hygiene in mind with no joins or cracks where bacteria can live.

Here are a few other pieces of useful info the team at iDD picked up:

  • TRIOS 5 Pod is released today. TRIOS 5 Move will not be released until 2023.
  • TRIOS 5 does not come with a cable / dummy battery. Meaning if the batteries run out you will have no way to connect the scanner and use it. The company is pushing the full day battery thing and provides 3 in the box - make sure you have one charged!
  • TRIOS 5 has the option of coming with a laptop included. You can use your own as well. 3Shape is selling a Dell Laptop for the scanner with the required specs at $2900. This is shown in an image below:
  • You have a few options such as what software and service agreement you want to purchase shown below:
  • TRIOS 5 will be rolling out globally. To check the availability in your region check this link.

And thats everything! Phew!

Some very big improvements to the TRIOS portfolio. A truly next generation product and worthy upgrade. This seems to be an excellent addition to the 3Shape line-up of IOS devices.

The cost is also competitive. The single best thing is seeing 3Shape take this action to ensure they do not price themselves out of this scanner market. They could have easily made it more expensive.

We will be publishing full IOS review of the TRIOS 5 by the end of the year. We will be hard at work testing this product in all clinical situations on real patients.

Keep an eye out to learn everything about the TRIOS 5 in the coming months.
